* Spent most of the weekend in Atlanta, GA at a work conference. The conference was very informative and I learned a lot that I look forward to putting into practice at my job.
* Toured the CNN building in Atlanta and watched Fredricka Whitfield live as she reported the news. It was a fun tour.
* Flew from Boise to Salt Lake to Nashville to Charlotte to Atlanta to Phoenix and back to Boise. With NO medication. I'm quite proud of myself. But I still don't like flying.
* Watched two drunk women try to get on a plane at the airport. One wasn't allowed on at all. The other was allowed on, the plane taxied away and then came back and made her get off. Apparently she was "touching" people on the plane. As they were both sitting together in the boarding area and the security personnel were discussing their plight, one looked at the other one and said "She looks fine to me". Oh my.
* Attended our church's annual Family Fair and Round-up at the fairgrounds. It was a great day with perfect weather.
* Ate a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios for dinner. Sometime a bowl of cereal is just perfect for dinner.
* Brought Ava Claire home with me for a few hours. We colored, played ponies, played on the swing set, played babies and took a nap together. That little girl just melts me.
How about you? Link your post over at Becky's and let us all know what your weekend was like.
As a nest is created from bits and pieces of everyday things - so is this blog. Welcome to my nest!

Random Dozen - 2/11/10
I'm joining in this week on Linda's Random Dozen. I've been reading them for weeks and I finally decided to jump in on the fun. And it has absolutely nothing to do with the sweet apron give-away if you join. Really.
1. Are you pleasant when you're ill, or are you a grumpy, fussy patient?
Um, I don't know that I'm pleasant, but I prefer to be a loner in my room, in my bed, with the tv on and did I mention I prefer to be alone?
2. When you find out that school is canceled (due to inclement weather) what is your gut reaction?
Yay! It's a holiday! Let's stay in our pj's all day and play Monopoly!!!
3. What is one domestic skill you wish you could improve?
I wish I was a more organized housekeeper. My house is usually picked up and "looks" clean, but the deep cleaning doesn't happen. I think if I were more organized then maybe the deep cleaning would happen on a more frequent basis.
4. Do you decorate your home for Valentine's Day?
I do try to put little things up to celebrate the day. I love Valentine's Day - it's so simple and sweet - not overwhelming like Christmas is. But I like to scatter vintage valentines around, and by vintage I mean valentine's I received when I was a little girl.
5. What song is on your mind today?
This morning on my way to work I was thinking of the words to the old hymn "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus".
6. Do you prefer contemporary movies or classic?
It depends on what mood I'm in but probably contemporary would win out over classic.
7. How well do you "compartmentalize" your feelings? For example, how well can you put aside a really trying moment to deal with the immediate situation which is not related to the trying moment, e.g., putting aside a tiff with your spouse in order to finish wallpapering a room.
I like to think I'm like most women - I don't compartmentalize at all. How's the saying go: Men are like waffles - women are like spaghetti.
8. What is the first thing that attracted you to your spouse? (Or if you're single, to your best friend.)
His personality - he just seemed to nice to be true.
9. When was the last time your heart raced?
Yesterday when I had to park in the south forty at Costco. It was a long way to walk. :)
10. What are your memories of Valentine's Day at school?
I remember how we always had to make a Valentine's box for classmates to put valentine's in. I loved making my box every year - it was when I first knew I loved making things.
11. If you were going to receive candy for Valentine's Day, which would you prefer?
I think I love Gheredelli's chocolate the very most. But the older I get the less I like chocolate. Weird, I know.
12. Red or pink?
Pink. I am more a pink personality - not a red personality. But I like red - on other people.

A Fun Book Meme
Willow at Willow's Cottage had a fun book meme on her blog. So I borrowed it. I heart books! So if you want to do this too, be my guest. I think it's always fun to read what other people's opinions of books are.
1. A Book that Changed your Life: So many books have changed me. I think the one that has had the most spiritual impact on my life is This Present Darkness by Frank Perretti. It caused me to see how powerful prayer is. I have never doubted its power since. And I pray much more intentionally now.
And also, Gone With the Wind. I read that in the 9th grade. I got so wrapped up in that story. I think that was when I decided I wanted to write books someday.
And the Little House on the Prairie books were the books that began my love affair with reading. I was so little when I read those - and I loved them. I still do.
And The Happy Hollister's! Does anybody remember those - how I loved reading those books in the third grade. We moved so much when I was a child and my books were some of my best friends!
2. A Book you read More than Once: Two From Galilee by Marjorie Holmes. I read it every Christmas.
3. A book you would take to a Desert Island: Besides the Bible. War and Peace. I've always wanted to read it but I'm sure I never will. Unless I'm on a desert island with nothing else to do!
4. A book that made you laugh: I am not usually a laugh out loud kind of person. But when I read Skipping Christmas by John Gresham, and I got to the part where Luther is trying to decorate the roof of his house, I laughed so hard I was crying. My family was looking at me like I had lost my mind. I don't know if it spoke to my cynical side or what - but now I try to read it every year after Christmas. Because I don't really want to skip Christmas.
5. A book that made you cry: Little Women - when Beth dies. It still makes me cry when I think about it.
6. A book you wish you had written: Anne of Green Gables - these were written by a pastors wife for her Sunday School class. They are so sweet. After I read them I felt like I had just woken up from a delicious dream.
7. A book you wish had not been written: H*elter S*kelter. I don't know whatever possessed (bad choice of word!) me to read that book but I did. When I was in high school. It was the first time I realized how sick and demented human beings could be. I didn't need to know that. I really didn't. And I've always regretted that I read it. It's true that what you fill your mind up with - stays there.
8. Two books that you are at present reading:
The Shack by William P. Young
The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs
9. A book you are going to read:
The Hospital by the River: A Story of Hope - Catherine Hamlin. I just ordered it from Amazon. It's a story about an incredible woman whom I admire deeply. She is an Australian woman who has carried on her husband's mission of restoring women's dignity and hope in Ethiopia. A must read.
10. A book you read and never figured out: Hmmmm....I can't think of an answer to this one. I'm sure there must be one but I must have blocked it from my memory!

A Book Meme

UPDATED TO ADD: I DISCOVERED WHERE I FOUND THIS BLOG! IT'S FROM KAREN AT OVER THE BACKYARD FENCE. THANKS KAREN - AND I'M SO SORRY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO REMEMBER!
I found this fun meme on somebodies blog the other day. Doesn't that sound terrible? I feel SO BAD because I cannot remember where! I always want to give credit where credit is due. But I simply cannot remember. It must have something to do with the fact that I am old. Or that I am tired. Or maybe both. Anyway, if you recognize this meme, please, please, please let me know and I will give you recognition. And a million apologies.
What are you reading right now?
The Kite Runner - hasn't been quite what I thought it was going to be, but it is holding my attention. I hardly ever read non-Christian books (I don't like the hopless feeling I always have after reading them) but I had heard so much about this one and I am really interested in reading about other cultures. It has excellent writing, and a good storyline. It does have a very harsh event in it - not for the squeamish. Maybe I'll give a review when I finish it.
Do you have any idea what you’ll read when you’re done with that?
Well, I literally have a 3 foot stack of books beside my bed - hopefully one of those. But you never know, I might find something else I have to read first! I have a real bad habit of picking up books whenever I go to Walmart, or the mall, or the grocery store for Pete's sakes!
What magazines do you have in your bathroom right now?
Yorkshire Terrier, Holiness Today, and Western Horseman. Now that's an interesting assortment, dont'cha think!
What’s the worst thing you were ever forced to read?
I wasn't forced, but I did try to read a Louie Lamour book because my husband loves them. I really didn't like it and I never did finish it.
What’s the one book you always recommend to just about everyone?
Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers - absolutely the best book ever written!
Is there a book you absolutely love, but for some reason, people never think it sounds interesting, or maybe they read it and don’t like it at all?
I am always trying to get my husband to read my books. I just know he will like them - but he is not much for fiction and plus if I tell him about the book then he really has no desire to read it because he thinks he already knows all about it.
Do you read books while you eat? While you bathe? While you watch movies or TV? While you listen to music? While you’re on the computer? While you’re driving?
I do like to read while I eat, during a bath (except I love hot water and I usually overheat), while my husband watches tv, not during music or the computer and gasp, I have been guilty of reading while driving -but that hasn't happened hardly ever. Once I memorized 2 Timothy chapter one while driving home from work.
When you were little, did other children tease you about your reading habits?
I was teased ALL. THE. TIME. I LOVED to read and my brother and cousins could not understand it. They tormented me. I didn't care. I'll bet it's why I'm smarter than them today LOL!!
What’s the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was so good you couldn't’t put it down?
I'm not very good at staying up past my bedtime, even to read. But I did stay up to read Rejoice by Karen Kingsbury. It has a very sad part in the book and I knew it was coming. I knew I was going to need some private time to cry - so my family wouldn't make fun of me!
If this sounds like fun to you, please do it on your blog and let me know so I can check it out!

The Winner of My 100th Post Celebration is . . . .
already selected. But first I want to tell you what a headache it was to pick a winner! If you remember, my sweet dog Josey was supposed to pick the winner out of her dog dish. So I carefully cut all the entries and folded them so they would all be the same size and placed them in her dish. Then I gave Josey a bath and combed her hair and put her prettiest bow in so she would look good in the picture I was going to take to post on today's announcement. Then I looked for my camera. And I looked some more. I couldn't find it. Apparently I loaned it to my sister this week and it is at her house. Oh well, we can still do this without pictures. So I proceeded to bring Josey to her dog dish to pick out the winner. Josey would not go near her dish. In fact she ran under my bed and hid. She will not come out. I am not getting this. She loves to be in the limelight and she LOVES paper. I thought this would be an easy task. So I coaxed her and bribed her with her favorite dried chicken treat. She came out long enough to grab her treat and then retreated under the bed again. Geesh....you would have thought I was asking her to kiss the cat or something! So anyway, I finally resorted to drawing the winning name out of the dog dish. Now I'm glad there was no camera! Anyway, I am happy to announce the winner of my 100th post celebration. She chose Today's Christian Woman magazine. And the winner is . . . . . . . drumroll please. . . . . . .
Karen from Over the Backyard Fence
Congratulations Karen!! This was a fun thing to do and thanks to all who entered their names and posted on their blogs about it. I'll have to think of something special for my 200th post and I'm thinking it won't be involving a certain little dog named Josey!

What a Great Day!
*UPDATE* 7-16-2007
It seems that I have exposed my bovine ignorance with this post. Okay, okay, as several friends have informed me, solid black cows are Angus cows. Unless they are Tarantaise, but apparently there aren't many of those in this area and they are usually brown, but if you have a black Tarantaise bull you then get black Tarantaise cattle which for some reason sell for more money. There are also black cows with white faces that are called Black Bali, but if they are black and white splotchy then they are Holsteins. Who knew? All I know is that you can call them whatever you want -I like black cows!
It is 9:00 a.m. on this Friday morning and it has already been a really great day!
It was such a beautiful morning to sit on the patio and enjoy my coffee with my sweet husband. We talk and go over what our plans for the day are. The birds are singing, Josey is sitting on my lap, the horses are grazing out back. Just a picture perfect morning.
I drive about 24 miles to work each day. My drive is all on back roads, quiet and peaceful. I drive through orchards and fields of corn, potatoes, alfalfa, and grain. It is an excellent time to think, sing, and pray. This morning I watched a crop duster spray an orchard. As he soared and glided up and down and all around this field, the sight took me back in my memories many years when as a little girl I used to watch my dad do the same thing. He was a crop duster. To this day the smell of 24-D always takes me back to the airport hanger where I sometimes hung out just to be with my dad. He is gone now - I enjoy when I experience things that remind me of him. Some things never die.
I also drove by a lush green field with black cows all over it. I don't know why, but I just love the sight of black cows grazing on a green pasture. It just makes me happy inside. I guess I should find out what black cows are called - let's see they aren't Jersey's, and they aren't Hereford's or Angus. Hmmmm...I'm going to have to ask about this one.
Then when I got to work today I logged on to my computer to find out that Thea of I'm a Drama Mama awarded me with the Rockin' Girl Blogger award!

I've seen this award floating around of course, but I never thought I would get one. Thanks Thea! You really made my day! I just love that bright pink color too! Thea is a fellow member of the May Day Weight Loss Challenge. We keep each other motivated. There is nothing that will sisters bond together more than a weight loss journey.
In keeping with the tradition I will bestow this award on 5 recipents that I think rock!
Katrina at Callapidder Days I love her reading challenges! Anybody who loves books rocks as far as I'm concerned!
Beth at I Should Be Folding Laundry who is also the one in charge of the whole May Day Weight Loss challenge. I REALLY appreciate her efforts and keeping us all accountable.
My girl, Tara, whom I think has rocked ever since I rocked her as a baby!
Diane from Partners in Prayer for our Prodigals who knows the pain of a child who is not walking with the Lord. She is full of hope and inspiration. I love her heart.
And PEI Girl. She is just the sweetest and kindest blogger friend. She does rock.
And finally, over at May Day Weight Loss Challenge, I was named The Loser of the Week! Never thought I would enjoy being called a Loser so much! Anyway, my weight loss journey story is posted here. So go check it out.

10 Things I Love

Karen from Over the Back Yard Fence challenged us to make a list of 10 Things I Love. I told her that the first thing on my list would be HER LIST! It's exactly the list I would write. Except for the one about her milk bottles being delivered. I had no idea milk could still be delivered in bottles - I thought it was at the store in plastic jugs these days!
So even though Karen used all the good ideas :-) I am going to make a list of 10 things that I love. And of course I love my husband and family more than anything. These are besides the obvious!
1. Watching the little Goldfinch's come to eat at the feeder I have by my patio.
2. Walking into my 17 year old daughter's room and over-hearing her pray on the phone with her friend.
3. My 2 cups of coffee I drink every morning on my patio. Every morning.
4. Getting a package of new books in the mail.
5. Freshly washed sheets.
6. How when I sit down, my little dog Josey, comes and waits for me to pick her up.
7. Listening to the children leave the sanctuary for Children's Church.
8. Growing berries in my back yard.
9. Quilts
10. When someone asks me, "Are you losing weight?"
Okay, so what 10 things do you love?

Local Restaurant Meme
Ooh! I've been tagged again! Thank you, Kittyhox!
Here are said rules:
1. Link to name of person that tagged you. (see above.)
2. Include state and country you live in.
3. List top five favorite local restaurants.
4. Tag five other people and let them know they've been tagged!
I live in Idaho and as much as I love it here, we are not exactly known for our local restaurants. So this is a bit of a stretch but let's see what I can do!
1. Our town's Drive-In. It's very small and you can eat inside or order through the drive through. They also have some patio tables to eat at when the weather is nice. The Drive-In specializes in broasted chicken and it is to die for. Now, this is not the menu to have if you are dieting of course, but as a special reward for when you have been very, very good - it is perfect. You get 2 large pieces of broasted chicken, potato wedges with sour cream and cole slaw. It really is wonderful. It is also very handy that our very good friends own the Drive-In - we try to support them as much as possible so of course that means we HAVE to eat more broasted chicken!
2. Mongolian Barbeque. I don't think this is a chain, people who come to visit us haven't been to one before. It is amazing. You fill a bowl with all kinds of veggies, meats, egg noodles, and a variety of sauces and oils. When you get to the end of the line you hand your bowl to a man who dumps it on a HUGE wok like creation that is extremely hot. He has a large stick and works your combination around all the while squirting water on the wok. They had it back to you, with a flourish, I might add. The result is a STEAMING HOT bowl of delicious. I can never finish it and I have enough for lunch for the next couple of days. This selection is very healthy and low fat.
3. Idaho Pizza is an awesome pizza place here in our area. They have very generous portions of everything and it is a great family atmosphere.
4. The Sandbar - this is a great restaurant for special occasions. It is on the Snake River and has terrific atmosphere. The food is great too. They specialize in prime rib - after all this is ranching country!
5. The Mirage. This place is a real hole in the wall and is in a town with a population of about 75. But, you must have reservations, especially on the weekend, or you can never get in. They are famous for their prime rib. The petite selection comes out to the table looking like a small roast! It is also amazing.
Well, there I guess I did come up with 5 local restaurants. So if you are ever out to southwestern Idaho, be sure and try some of these places out!@
I am supposed to tag 5 people, but I am just going to leave that up to you. If you would like to play, jump in!

A Little Meme
Bunnytrails tagged me to do this meme. So here goes:
1. Grab the book closest to you
2. Open it to page 161
3. Find the fifth full sentence
4. Post the text of the sentence to your blog
5. Don't search around for the coolest book you have, use the one that is really next to you.
6. Tag five people to do this meme.
The book closest to me happens to be "Second Calling, Finding Passion and Purpose for the Rest of Your Life" by Dale Hanson Bourke. However, page 161 is the end of a chapter and there were not five complete sentences. (This kind of stuff stresses me out!) So I am breaking the rules (I'm so sorry) and using page 160 instead. So the 5th full sentence on page 160 of my book is:
"When I'm in my eighties, who will I still be whispering to or sharing my dreams with?"
Isn't that a great question? I was relieved to know that women in their eighties still have dreams! I love that thought!
Okay, I am tagging these five people:

Corrie

Denise
I Should Be Folding Laundry
Enjoy!

My New Favorite Place
I used to think that retired snowbirds were kind of a funny sort. I thought it was interesting that these folks would relocate every winter to a warmer climate. I don't think they are so funny anymore. Maybe it's because I am getting closer to their age, but I prefer to think it is because I am just becoming more understanding and compassionate and sensitive to all those around me;).
Anyway, I am becoming a person who loves warm weather. I love gardening and being outside on nice warm days. So this year my husband and I decided to make an "outdoor room" that we could enjoy. I am so pleased with it.
Here I am with my four daughters, two sons-in-law, and my mom on Mother's Day. We had such a great day together. My family is God's gift to me and I enjoy them so very much!

We eventually plan to add a "living room" area to the patio. We bought one of those patio fireplaces so we can enjoy some of the cooler weather too. My husband and I (mostly my husband) poured the cement and stamped and stained the border. We had a professional come in and do the cover. It's been done for a week now and we enjoy it more all the time!

Random Things
I have been tagged by Mom Tu-Tu to do the 8 Random Things meme. Here are the rules I found over at her place.
Here are the rules:
1. Each player starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves.
2. People who are tagged write a blog post about their own 8 random things and post these rules.
3. At the end of your blog you need to tag 8 people and post their names.
4. Don't forget to leave them a comment and tell them they're tagged, and to read your blog.
Eight Random Things About Me:
1) I LOVE LOVE LOVE Diet Dr. Pepper - it is the best ever.
2) I am absolutely terrified of snakes. Two summers ago I stumbled across a 4 1/2 foot snake all stretched out in my back yard and I have felt violated ever since. I just can't enjoy my yard like I used to - I am constantly on the look out for snakes. But weirdly enough, I can't stop myself from watching snake shows on Animal Planet and National Geographic - go figure! I probably need to see a therapist or something!
3) I don't like Sunday night church. A little strange I suppose since I am a pastor's wife and all - but maybe not so much. I am so involved in many church things and am involved in evening church activities AT LEAST two other week nights and Sunday night just seems like a nice evening to rest and relax and prepare for the upcoming week. I'm just saying.
4) I am a news addict. By the way, I just learned that the word news is an acronym for: north, east, west, and south. (How's that for random!)
5) I hate onions but I love onion rings.
6) I have never been the driver in a car accident.
7) Hawaii is my most favorite place to go ever. My husband and I went there on our 25th anniversary and it was the happiest time. I live for the day when we get to go back again. I hope it's soon!
8) I would love to own/operate a Bed and Breakfast someday. I doubt if it will ever happen but I'm collecting breakfast recipe's just in case!
I am tagging:

Sharon at Sit With Me Awhile
Betty at On the Journey to Victory

Simple Things

I have been thinking recently of how it is the simple things in my life that bring me so much contentment, joy, and even happiness. Here is a short list of some of the simple things in my life:
*My husband brings me coffee in bed every morning except Sunday, that's the day I bring it to him. That is such a special time and when we are apart I really miss it.
*Praise from a loved one. My daughter left me a voicemail this week telling me she was proud of me and that I had done a good job on an event I planned. My heart still wells up when I think of it - I love making my family proud of me.
*The joy of reading a good book! I love when I find a book that I don't want to end. When I am done it is almost like waking up from a delicious dream!
*Watching home videos of when either you or your kids were younger! It just whips me back in time and isn't it amazing how time seems to erase all the bad and ugly feelings and leaves us with just the good memories?
*Any time at all spent in my sewing room!
*Having an afternoon free - with no plans!
*Saturday mornings, when I can putter around my home, clean, bake, and do all the things I long to do during the work week.
*Hearing a song that takes me back to a happy memory.
*Watching my husband work with his horses - it gives him so much joy. It is good to see a hard-working man relax and have fun. He looks really sexy too!
*Observing my married daughters adjust to sharing their lives with the men they love.
*Doing something nice for a good friend.
*Treating myself to a fat-free sugar-free caramel latte - something I don't do very often because it is hard to justify the cost.
*Pulling weeds! Yes, I really said that - pulling weeds. I love gardening and pulling weeds gives me time to think and pray and put my flowerbeds in order. It feels so good when I am done and I solve all the worlds problems during the process!
*Blogging has become a simple joy to me as well! I love "meeting" new people and keeping a journal of my thoughts and experiences.
*Reading along in my Bible when something just jumps off the page and I just KNOW it is a message to me from my God!
I'm very thankful for the simple things in my life - things I don't have to plan or work for - they just occur because of someone else's thoughtfulness or just because I take the time to notice them.
And, oh yeah, here is a picture of another simple joy:

Cookin' and Sewin'
There are two things I LOVE to do that are so fulfilling to me. One is to cook for my family and the other is to sew. They are both creative outlets that make me feel like I am doing a good job being a wife and mother. I even feel sometimes that I can know just a little bit how God must have felt after he finished his "burst of creativity" when he created the world and sat back and said "It is good!".
Last night I got to spend time doing both of the things I love. First, it was 24 Night. That is every Monday night, my kids all come over and we have dinner together and then we pile on upstairs, all eight of us and all 6 of our dogs, and watch 24! We have such a good time! Last night I made homemade chicken noodle soup and it was so YUMMY! It is so cold outside and nothing warms you up like a bowl of soup! Here is the recipe for anyone interested:

Last night I made homemade chicken noodle soup and it was so YUMMY! It is so cold outside and nothing warms you up like a bowl of soup! Here is the recipe for anyone interested:
HOMEMADE CHICKEN AND NOODLE SOUP
Fill a pot that will hold the amount of soup you want with water and boil a chicken until it is done. Remove the chicken and let cool. While it is cooling prepare the noodles:
In a stainless steel bowl mix:
2 cups flour
3 egg yolks
1 egg
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup water
I kneed the dough and then roll it out flat. After it is rolled out I then use my secret ingredient: nutmeg!
Sprinkle the nutmeg lightly over the surface of the dough and roll over it a time or two with the roller to press it in. Then I cut the noodles into 1/2 inch strips and throw them in the cooking broth. I also add about 2 tbsps. of chicken bouillion to the broth. Then I debone the chicken and add the meat to the broth and let it all simmer for about 30 minutes. It is absolutely delicious and the left overs are even better!
Last night I also had the time to finish a gift I am making for my neice who is expecting her first baby, a little girl, next month. I made her a baby sling to carry the baby in and I just love how it turned out. Here is my daughter Andr
ea modeling the sling with a baby doll inside:

I am so happy with how it turned out! Someday I will have little grandbabies to make these for!
One of the "positive" things about when your children leave the nest is that it gives you more room. I converted my daughter Andrea's room into my sewing room and I just love spending time in here:
I have a whole pile of patterns and fabric that I can't wait to get started on! Now that the wedding is over I can start doing some of these projects. I plan to make some baby quilts for gifts for new babies arriving in our church, some really neat "stack and whack" quilted placemats, and a special wallhanging that I received as a gift for Christmas. I can tell my creative cravings are about to be fulfilled and "IT IS GOOD"!
