A Fun Book Meme

Willow at Willow's Cottage had a fun book meme on her blog. So I borrowed it. I heart books! So if you want to do this too, be my guest. I think it's always fun to read what other people's opinions of books are.

1. A Book that Changed your Life: So many books have changed me. I think the one that has had the most spiritual impact on my life is This Present Darkness by Frank Perretti. It caused me to see how powerful prayer is. I have never doubted its power since. And I pray much more intentionally now.
And also, Gone With the Wind. I read that in the 9th grade. I got so wrapped up in that story. I think that was when I decided I wanted to write books someday.
And the Little House on the Prairie books were the books that began my love affair with reading. I was so little when I read those - and I loved them. I still do.
And The Happy Hollister's! Does anybody remember those - how I loved reading those books in the third grade. We moved so much when I was a child and my books were some of my best friends!

2. A Book you read More than Once: Two From Galilee by Marjorie Holmes. I read it every Christmas.

3. A book you would take to a Desert Island: Besides the Bible. War and Peace. I've always wanted to read it but I'm sure I never will. Unless I'm on a desert island with nothing else to do!

4. A book that made you laugh: I am not usually a laugh out loud kind of person. But when I read Skipping Christmas by John Gresham, and I got to the part where Luther is trying to decorate the roof of his house, I laughed so hard I was crying. My family was looking at me like I had lost my mind. I don't know if it spoke to my cynical side or what - but now I try to read it every year after Christmas. Because I don't really want to skip Christmas.

5. A book that made you cry: Little Women - when Beth dies. It still makes me cry when I think about it.

6. A book you wish you had written: Anne of Green Gables - these were written by a pastors wife for her Sunday School class. They are so sweet. After I read them I felt like I had just woken up from a delicious dream.

7. A book you wish had not been written: H*elter S*kelter. I don't know whatever possessed (bad choice of word!) me to read that book but I did. When I was in high school. It was the first time I realized how sick and demented human beings could be. I didn't need to know that. I really didn't. And I've always regretted that I read it. It's true that what you fill your mind up with - stays there.

8. Two books that you are at present reading:
The Shack by William P. Young
The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs

9. A book you are going to read:
The Hospital by the River: A Story of Hope - Catherine Hamlin. I just ordered it from Amazon. It's a story about an incredible woman whom I admire deeply. She is an Australian woman who has carried on her husband's mission of restoring women's dignity and hope in Ethiopia. A must read.

10. A book you read and never figured out: Hmmmm....I can't think of an answer to this one. I'm sure there must be one but I must have blocked it from my memory!

War and Peace is like a big soap opera once you get into it.

I LOVED it......but it took 2 tries to get going.
It is totally worth it in the end.
Yes, Helter Skelter was horrid - one reads that sort of stuff when young and wonders why.
Nancy Mitford writes wonderful books about love.......

This was wonderful to read! I read Two from Galilee years ago and still have it. I need to go dig it out. I haven't read War & Peace either. I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but, there, I did. I'd love to do this meme -- I saw it floating around about a month ago and never got to it.

Fun meme, and I loved your choice of War and Peace - that's the only way I'd ever read it either.

I read Helter Skelter in high school too, and I don't know why. It was very disturbing, and probably is a book that changed me, because I knew I could no longer read or see things that would disturb me like that. I have to walk out of movies on tv and go to my bedroom. I can't take that kind of thing. So that book taught me that. I had nightmares for weeks.
